"Opera addresses all of my feelings.", "Each performance is a special occasion for me." or "Opera is always relevant. It's often about things that could be news headlines." There’s only one way to find out if you feel the same way: a night at the opera.
For newcomers, we recommend our event 'New at the Opera?'. To take part you can attend two popular operas: 'The Magic Flute' or 'La traviata'. On the evening of the performance, we will welcome you personally to our foyer and answer all your questions. You will also learn everything you need to know about your visit to the opera and about the piece itself.
We offer 'New at the Opera?' on the following dates:
The Magic Flute This classic from the mind of musical genius Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart is the most frequently performed German-language opera of all time. 'The Magic Flute' has been delighting people worldwide for over 200 years with its fairytale figures, the battle of the star-flaming "Queen of the Night" against the mighty Sarastro and, of course, its enchantingly beautiful music.
LA TRAVIATA The drinking song from this Verdi opera is considered one of the most famous melodies ever written. After the exhilarating rush in the first act, the catastrophe takes its course in typical operatic fashion. The terminally ill Violetta must leave her lover Alfredo due to pressure from his family. Only on her deathbed can they embrace each other once again.
A visit to the opera is always something special. You can celebrate it with your favourite evening wear or just come as you like. Both are acceptable. Despite stereotypes, ball gowns, tails and bow ties are rarely seen in the opera house.
On foot, by bicycle, by car: Kurt-Drees-Str. 4 in Wuppertal Barmen, directly opposite the Barmer Bahnhof on Friedrich-Engels-Allee (B7). There are parking spaces at 'Barmer Bahnhof‹ and behind the opera house next to the Engelsgarten.
By public transport: By bus and train: station 'Barmer Bahnhof' With the suspension railway: station 'Adlerbrücke'
Please arrive well before curtain-up. You can leave your jacket at the cloakroom for €1,50. Look forward to our 'New at the Opera?' event, which takes place 60 minutes before the performance begins. Drinks and soft pretzels cost between €2.50 and €6.
It's starting! With a break, a performance takes about 2 hours 45 minutes. Now you can sit back and enjoy. If you wish, the 'Opera Guru' app provides you with precise information on the action to further enhance your experience. You can always applaud when you have enjoyed the performance and of course: at the very end!
